Lighting brings a big impact in creating an atmosphere to your home – inside and out. It does not only illuminate the place, but it also provides safety, security and a sense of comfort. As a homeowner, you have to remember that lighting is equally important as your artwork and furniture pieces as well as your color choices for your home. That means a good lighting contributes to the overall aesthetics, creating a warm and welcoming environment in the process.
Sad to say, not all homeowners are able to grasp the concept of having a good lighting. As a result, they just buy the same lighting system in every room in the house. What a waste of energy! Nonetheless, there are simple yet effective lighting techniques that you can implement.
1) Determine what your lighting goals are
You can’t have a good lighting if you don’t know what you want to have for your home. You can start by determining whether you want to have a direct or task lighting, if you want the light to focus in the working space or if you want an ambient or indirect lighting for overall illumination. Whichever you choose, know that the light will help set the mood of a particular room.
2) Use multiple light sources for one space inside
For bedrooms, kitchen, and living spaces, it is advisable to use a variety of light sources to achieve the desirable functions and activities in that given space. For instance, for your living room, you can use a floor lamp next to your couch. In bathrooms, the lighting should be free from glaring lights to prevent shadows.
3) For formal living and dining areas, research chandeliers wisely
Using a chandelier is advisable in formal rooms. Some chandelier may come in simple designs yet it has always an elegant touch to it. However, you have to know what type of chandelier to use to match the style of your house.
4) For kitchen, make use of direct lights on countertops and kitchen islands
Don’t just settle for a typical kitchen at home. To make it more appealing, you can install lights on the countertops and kitchen islands instead of having just one light at the middle part of the kitchen.
5) Install night lighting in nurseries and kids’ room
Kids can have a good night sleep when there’s a good lighting in their room. This will prevent them from having some negative thoughts and from being scared of the dark. You can also consider a dim wall sconce or table lamp for nurseries.
6) Use recessed lighting for high ceilings and modern décor
Recessed lighting is also known as the “can” light fixture, where the metal that is inserted into the ceiling and the light fixture fits inside. This lighting system can be connected to dimmer switches to give a the entire room a light from subtly dim to full brightness.
7) Add drama and bring more light to certain posts
Lights can also bring out the beauty of a particular thing. If you are planning to give emphasis on your wooden ceiling, you can add wall-mounted sconces. You may also hide spotlights behind furniture for an upward glow.
8) Optimize daylight
Nothing beats a warm, fresh, and natural light than the daylight. It doesn’t just give you the light that you need, you can also save electricity. To achieve such, you can rethink how you can utilize the windows to keep daylight from getting too hot and harsh.
9) Use exterior wall sconces for décor
Lighting systems have many varieties. You can also use exterior wall sconces to create an ambiance in the evening. To focus the light on the architectural elements of your home, you may use directional sconces.
10) Provide lighting for safety and security on the exterior of your home
When the purpose of your lighting is for safety and security, provide an ambient lighting for walkways, sidewalks, the perimeter, and the front entry of your house. This will prevent the intruders from entering your house.
